Born on the 15th of January 1956 in Baghdad, Iraq, Mazin completed his BSc Degree in Architecture from the University of Baghdad, Iraq, in 1978 with distinction. He later completed his MSc Degree in Architecture from the University of Baghdad in 1987, also with distinction, specialising in Modular Design.
Currently, he is a senior lecturer of ‘Design’ at IDEAschool, experienced in teaching various topics related to design concepts, methodologies, and production since 1996. He was the Programme Coordinator for the Visual Arts and Design Programme from 2009 – 2011.
Before immigrating to New Zealand in 1995, he worked as an architect in Iraq, Jordan, and the UK in fields of architectural design practice, observation, planning, site residency, shop-drawings, documentation, and supervision of a wide range of projects: residential, commercial, cultural, and educational from 1978 – 1995. He established his own architectural practice in Baghdad from 1991 – 1994.
Mazin was involved in a number of architectural competitions and achieved success and honourable awards.
He was also a lecturer at the Department of Architecture, University of Technology, Baghdad, Iraq, from 1991 – 1994, with teaching experience in topics of architectural design including observation and analysis of undergraduate students’ design projects.
In New Zealand, he continued his passion for investigating the qualities of living spaces to visualise and construct design solutions to solve issues of human habitation with a focus on ecology and culture. His investigation’s aim is to provide a workable model that can potentially influence attitudes towards spatial design within the community.
